Darla Hughes: I began Sewin' Fun Sewing School 26 years ago after being challenged to attend a workshop about setting up a business to offer sewing lessons. I had not been interested in sewing for some years, since my children became pre-adolescent. However, I came away from the workshop feeling like I was walking on air! I was very excited, and began immediately with preparations to set up a classroom in my home.
It must have been Providence, because every detail fell into place in an orderly manner, and by fall, I started classes with 8 students. By the following January, I had 12 students and from there business took off as word got around. Word of mouth always has been my best method of advertising!
The program I begin with is called Kids Can Sew, and it is a basic program that starts with an orientation lesson of the sewing machine. Students make a bean bag that day, so they have something to take home after the first class. Next, students make a drawstring bag, and from there choose to make either shorts, pants, a skirt, a nightgown, culottes or one of 3 tops. I move them on to Level Two (which is working with stretch knitted fabrics) and Level Three, which includes all other commercial patterns.
Over the years, as the School has grown, I have integrated many other programs, such as classes for adults, Moms and Tots, Sewing Birthday Parties and crafts.
My program is "on-growing" and the sky is the limit as far as projects to sew! I teach boys and girls (ages 6 and up), teens and adults - including men. I am (and have been for the past 13 years) teaching from a classroom set up in my home, near the Regional Hospital in South Lethbridge. I take up to 4 students per class.
The school is outfitted with 4 Husqvarna sewing machines, two sergers, and one computerized machine to learn from. My classroom is large enough for two cutting tables and contains filing drawers full of hundreds of patterns I have collected and prepared over the years.
Sewin' Fun also offers custom sewing and alteration services, such as the hemming of pants, dresses and skirts, as well as work on formal dresses and household projects, etc.
